Brioche Stitch Sweater
How to knit the Brioche Stitch Sweater:
Sizes: US 4–6 (10–12) 18–20; UK 8–10 (14–16) 22–24
Materials:
700 (750) 850 grams of yarn (50 percent cotton, 50 percent polyacrylic, 160 meters per 50 grams); straight knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4); circular knitting needles 3 mm (US 2.5).
Ribbing Pattern, with 3 millimeter needles: work alternately 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
All following stitch patterns are worked with 3.5 millimeter needles.
Stockinette Stitch: on right-side rows, knit stitches; on wrong-side rows, purl stitches.
Square Pattern: the number of stitches is a multiple of 4 plus 2 stitches.
Row 1: * 2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches, repeat from *, end with 2 purl stitches.
Rows 2 and 4: work the stitches as they appear.
Row 3: * 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, repeat from *, end with 2 knit stitches.
Repeat rows 1 to 4 throughout.
Pattern Sequence: * work 4 rows of Square Pattern, 12 rows of Stockinette Stitch, repeat from * throughout.
Brioche Panel (width 31 stitches):
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Repeat rows 1 to 16 throughout.
Gauge: 26.5 stitches and 35.5 rows equal 10 by 10 cm.
Back:
Cast on 144 (160) 180 stitches and work between the edge stitches 3 cm, that is 10 rows, in Square Pattern.
At the same time, decrease 1 stitch in the last row, 143 (159) 179 stitches remain.
Then distribute the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 6 (10) 20 stitches in Pattern Sequence, * 31 stitches Brioche Panel, 18 (22) 22 stitches in Pattern Sequence, repeat from * once more, 31 stitches Brioche Panel, 6 (10) 20 stitches in Pattern Sequence, 1 edge stitch.
For size 50/52, begin the Square Pattern after the edge stitch with 2 knit stitches.
After 66 cm, that is 236 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 23 (29) 35 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For the neckline shaping, bind off at the inner edge every second row 1 time 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches, and 3 times 1 stitch.
After 70 cm, that is 250 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 50 (55) 62 shoulder stitches.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a deeper neckline.
After 63.5 cm, that is 226 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 25 (31) 37 stitches.
Then bind off at the inner edge every second row 1 time 3 stitches and 3 times 1 stitch,
then every fourth row 3 times 1 stitch.
Sleeves:
Cast on 69 stitches for each sleeve and distribute the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 18 stitches in Pattern Sequence, 31 stitches Brioche Panel, 18 stitches in Pattern Sequence, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping, increase at both sides from the cast-on edge 26 times 1 stitch alternately every fourth and sixth row and 6 times 1 stitch every fourth row (26 times 1 stitch alternately every fourth and sixth row and 6 times 1 stitch every fourth row), 36 times 1 stitch every fourth row, working the increased stitches into the pattern, 113 (133) 141 stitches in total.
After 44.5 cm, that is 158 rows, (44.5 cm, that is 158 rows) 41.5 cm, that is 148 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Sew the shoulder seams.
Pick up 126 (138) 150 stitches around the neckline with the circular knitting needles, work 2 cm in Ribbing Pattern, and bind off the stitches as they appear.
Set in the sleeves and sew the side seams and sleeve seams.
