Cardigan with Brioche and Square Pattern
How to knit the cardigan with brioche and check pattern:
Sizes (US/UK): US 6/8 (12/14) 20/22 – UK 10/12 (16/18) 24/26
Material:
750 (800) 900 g yarn (100 percent merino wool, 150 m/50 g); straight needles US 4 (3.5 mm); circular needles US 1.5 (2.5 mm); 6 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern, needles US 1.5 (2.5 mm): alternately 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
All following patterns work with needles US 4 (3.5 mm).
Stockinette stitch: right-side rows knit stitches, wrong-side rows purl stitches.
Square pattern: number of stitches divisible by 4 + 2.
Row 1: * 2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches, repeat from *, 2 purl stitches;
Rows 2 and 4: work the stitches as they appear;
Row 3: * 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, repeat from *, 2 knit stitches.
Repeat Rows 1 to 4.
Pattern sequence: * 4 rows check pattern, 12 rows stockinette stitch, repeat from *.
Brioche stripe ( = 31 stitches):
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear.
Repeat Rows 1 to 16.
Gauge: 24.5 stitches and 35.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches.
Back:
Cast on 135 (151) 169 stitches and arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 10 (14) 19 stitches in pattern sequence, for size US 20/22 start the check pattern with 1 knit stitch, * 31 stitches brioche stripe, 10 (14) 18 stitches in pattern sequence, repeat from * once, 31 stitches brioche stripe, 10 (14) 19 stitches in pattern sequence, 1 edge stitch.
After 66 cm = 236 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 17 (23) 29 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For neckline shaping, bind off at the inner edge every 2nd row 4 times 2 stitches and 2 times 1 stitch.
After 70 cm = 250 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 49 (54) 60 shoulder stitches.
Left front:
Cast on 69 (77) 86 stitches and arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 10 (14) 19 stitches in pattern sequence, for size US 20/22 start the check pattern with 1 knit stitch, 31 stitches brioche stripe, 10 (14) 18 stitches in pattern sequence, the first 16 stitches of the brioche stripe, 1 edge stitch.
After 64 cm = 228 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off at the left edge 1 time 6 (9) 12 stitches for the neckline, then every 2nd row 2 times 3 stitches, 2 times 2 stitches, and 3 times 1 stitch, then in the following 4th row 1 time 1 stitch.
Right front:
Work mirror image of the left front, that is, after the edge stitch begin with the last stitches of the brioche stripe.
Sleeves:
Cast on 77 stitches for each sleeve and arrange the stitches as follows: 1 edge stitch, 22 stitches in pattern sequence, 31 stitches brioche stripe, 22 stitches in pattern sequence, 1 edge stitch.
For sleeve shaping, increase on both sides from the cast-on edge 16 times 1 stitch alternately every 4th and 6th row and 12 times 1 stitch every 6th row (16 times 1 stitch alternately every 4th and 6th row and 12 times 1 stitch every 6th row) 28 times 1 stitch every 4th row and 5 times 1 stitch every 6th row, working the increased stitches into the pattern = 133 (133) 143 stitches.
After 44.5 cm = 158 rows (44.5 cm = 158 rows) 41.5 cm = 148 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Work the shoulder seams.
Pick up 211 stitches along the vertical edges of the fronts and work them in Ribbing Pattern.
At a height of 1 cm, work 5 buttonholes evenly spaced on the right front band (= bind off 1 stitch and cast it on again in the next row).
Work the first buttonhole 12 stitches from the lower edge, the distance between the following buttonholes is 39 stitches.
At a front band height of 2 cm, bind off all stitches as they appear.
Pick up 139 (151) 163 stitches around the neckline and along the short sides of the bands using circular needles and work them in Ribbing Pattern.
After 1 cm, work 1 more buttonhole on the right band, 3 stitches in from the right edge.
At a facing height of 2 cm, bind off all stitches as they appear.
Set in the sleeves.
Work the sleeve seams and side seams.
Sew on the buttons.
