Cardigan with English Rib Yoke
How to knit the cardigan with English rib yoke
Size: US 8 / UK 12
Material:
320 g of yarn (50% wool, 50% acrylic, 392 m/100 g), US size 1.5 (2.5 mm) needles and 3 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern 1x1: * knit 1, purl 1 *, repeat.
English Rib Pattern:
Row 1: 1 edge stitch, * yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 *, 1 edge stitch.
Row 2: 1 edge stitch, * yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit together the yarn over with the stitch from the previous row *, 1 edge stitch.
Repeat from Row 2 throughout.
Moss Stitch:
Row 1: 1 edge stitch, * knit 1, purl 1 *, 1 edge stitch.
Row 2 and all wrong-side rows: work the stitches as they appear.
Row 3: 1 edge stitch, * purl 1, knit 1 *, 1 edge stitch.
Repeat from Row 1.
Tubular Rib:
Row 1: * knit 1, slip 1 stitch with yarn in front *, repeat.
In following rows, work the slipped stitches as knits and slip the previously knitted stitches with yarn in front.
Lace Cable Pattern:
Work according to the chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1–16 in height.
Gauge: 30 stitches x 40 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Cardigan:
Right Front:
Cast on 82 stitches and work in Moss Stitch, at the same time decrease on the right edge for the slope 1 stitch every 8th row 5 times.
After 8 cm continue in the Lace Cable Pattern.
Distribute the stitches (82 – 5 = 77 stitches) as follows: 1 edge stitch, 7 knit stitches, 68 stitches in Lace Cable Pattern starting from A, 1 edge stitch.
Continue shaping the slope at the right edge, decreasing 1 stitch every 8th row 9 times.
At 30 cm from the lower edge (68 stitches remain), bind off at the right edge for the armhole 2 stitches every 2nd row 13 times (= 26 stitches).
At the same time, at 31.5 cm, bind off at the left edge for the yoke shaping: 7 stitches once, then 4 stitches 6 times, 3 stitches 3 times, and 2 stitches once (= 42 stitches).
At 37 cm bind off all stitches.
Left Front: work symmetrically.
Back:
Cast on 169 stitches and work in Moss Stitch, decreasing at both edges for the slope 1 stitch every 8th row 5 times.
After 8 cm continue in the Lace Cable Pattern.
Distribute the stitches (169 – 5 = 164 stitches) as follows: 1 edge stitch, 7 knit stitches, 148 stitches in Lace Cable Pattern starting from A, 7 knit stitches, 1 edge stitch.
Continue shaping the slope, decreasing 1 stitch at each edge every 8th row 9 times.
At 30 cm (146 stitches remain), bind off for the armholes 2 stitches every 2nd row 13 times at both edges (= 52 stitches in total).
At the same time, at 35 cm, bind off the central 34 stitches for the neckline, then at each side of neckline bind off 10 stitches every 2nd row 3 times (= 94 stitches remain).
At 37 cm bind off all stitches.
Sleeves:
Cast on 111 stitches and work in Moss Stitch, decreasing at both edges for the slope 1 stitch every 8th row 5 times.
After 8 cm continue in the Lace Cable Pattern.
Distribute the stitches (111 – 10 = 101 stitches) as follows: 1 edge stitch, 99 stitches in Lace Cable Pattern starting from B, 1 edge stitch.
Continue decreasing 1 stitch at each edge every 8th row 6 times.
At 22 cm (89 stitches remain), bind off for sleeve caps 1 stitch every 6th row 5 times at both edges.
At 32 cm bind off the remaining 79 stitches.
Finishing:
Sew side seams and sleeve seams. Set in the sleeves.
Pick up 208 stitches along the yoke edge of back, fronts and sleeves, and work 12 cm in English Rib. Then decrease as follows: 1 edge stitch, 1 purl stitch, * work together 1 knit stitch with yarn over and the following purl stitch as 1 knit stitch (two stitches plus yarn over worked as one knit stitch); work together 1 knit stitch with yarn over and the following purl stitch as 1 purl stitch (two stitches plus yarn over worked as one purl stitch) *, repeat from * to *, 1 edge stitch.
After the decreases, continue in Ribbing Pattern 1x1 for 5 cm, then work 3 cm in Tubular Rib.
Along the edges of fronts and yoke, pick up 270 stitches for each band and work 4 cm in Tubular Rib, making 3 buttonholes evenly.
Sew on the buttons.
Mittens:
Cast on 54 stitches and work in Ribbing Pattern 1x1, at the same time increase at both edges 1 stitch every 10th row 10 times.
At 35 cm (74 stitches) bind off all stitches.
Sew side seams.
