Cardigan with Vertical Cables
How to work the cardigan with vertical cables:
Sizes: UK 14/16 (18/20); US 10/12 (14/16)
Material:
650 (700) g yarn (70 percent merino wool, 20 percent silk, 10 percent cashmere, 85 m per 50 g); knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4).
Stockinette stitch: Right-side rows: knit stitches, wrong-side rows: purl stitches.
Reverse stockinette stitch: Right-side rows: purl stitches, wrong-side rows: knit stitches.
Garter stitch: Right-side and wrong-side rows: knit stitches.
Ribbing Pattern:
Number of stitches is a multiple of 6 plus 3.
Work as follows: * 3 stitches in stockinette stitch, 3 stitches in reverse stockinette stitch, repeat from *, end with 3 stitches in stockinette stitch.
Cable A over 18 stitches:
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches.
Repeat rows 1 to 14 throughout.
Cable B over 18 stitches:
Work as for Cable A, but in row 5 of the chart cross the center 6 stitches to the left (= place 3 stitches on a cable needle in front of the work, work 3 knit stitches, then work the stitches from the cable needle as knit stitches).
Pocket lining (2 pieces):
Cast on 39 stitches and work in Ribbing Pattern.
After 15.5 cm = 54 rows from the cast-on edge, place all stitches on hold.
Gauge:
Ribbing Pattern: 27 stitches and 35 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Stockinette stitch: 24 stitches and 35 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Cable: width 6 cm.
Back:
Cast on 159 (171) stitches using the crossed cast-on and work in Ribbing Pattern without edge stitches.
After 46 cm = 160 rows (45 cm = 156 rows) from the cast-on edge, bind off on both sides for the armholes in every second row 2 times 2 stitches and 10 times 1 stitch = 131 (143) stitches.
After 69 cm = 240 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the center 29 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For rounding the neckline, bind off at the inner edge in every second row 1 time 3 stitches and 2 times 1 stitch.
After 71 cm = 248 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 44 (50) shoulder stitches.
Left front:
Cast on 100 (106) stitches using the crossed cast-on and work as follows:
9 (15) stitches Ribbing Pattern, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 7 stitches stockinette stitch, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 18 stitches Cable A, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 8 stitches stockinette stitch, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 18 stitches Cable A, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 21 stitches Ribbing Pattern, 4 stitches garter stitch.
After 16 cm = 56 rows from the cast-on edge, after working the first 21 (18) stitches from the right edge, place the next 39 stitches on hold and work the stitches of the pocket lining instead.
Then work the first 51 (57) stitches in Ribbing Pattern and continue working the remaining stitches as before.
Work the armhole at the right edge as for the back = 86 (92) stitches.
After 53 cm = 186 rows from the cast-on edge, for the neckline slope work 2 stitches together purlwise before the cable.
Repeat these decreases 8 more times in every fourth row and 4 times in every sixth row.
After 71 cm = 248 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off 45 (51) stitches at the right edge for the shoulder = 73 (79) stitches.
Work the remaining 28 collar stitches straight, in the first row increase 1 edge stitch at the right edge = 29 stitches.
After 10 cm from the shoulder line, bind off all stitches.
Right front:
Cast on 100 (106) stitches using the crossed cast-on and work as follows:
4 stitches garter stitch, 21 stitches Ribbing Pattern, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 18 stitches Cable B, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 8 stitches stockinette stitch, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 18 stitches Cable B, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 7 stitches stockinette stitch, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 9 (15) stitches Ribbing Pattern.
Work the piece symmetrical to the left front.
Left sleeve:
Cast on 72 (76) stitches using the crossed cast-on and work as follows:
24 (26) stitches stockinette stitch, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 18 stitches Cable B, 3 stitches reverse stockinette stitch, 24 (26) stitches stockinette stitch.
At the same time, increase on both sides from the cast-on edge 26 times 1 stitch alternately in every fourth and sixth row, work the increased stitches in stockinette stitch = 124 (128) stitches.
After 38.5 cm = 134 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off on both sides in every second row 9 times 2 stitches.
After 43.5 cm = 152 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 88 (92) stitches.
Right sleeve: Work as for the left sleeve, but with Cable A.
Finishing:
Work the pocket facings over the held 39 stitches in Ribbing Pattern for 2.5 cm, then bind off all stitches as they appear.
Sew the narrow sides of the pocket facings to the fronts.
Sew the pocket linings to the wrong side of the fronts.
Sew the shoulder seams.
Set in the sleeves and sew side seams and sleeve seams.
Sew the collar to the neckline of the back and seam the collar pieces together.
Fold the 4 garter stitch stitches of the front edging to the inside and sew in place.
