Sizes: US 8–10 / UK 12–14 (US 12–14 / UK 16–18).
Materials: 1100 (1150) g yarn (100% cotton; 87 yd/50 g); knitting needles US 4 and 7 (3.5 and 4.5 mm); circular needle US 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 buttons.
Ribbing Pattern, needles US 4 (3.5 mm): work alternately 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
Reverse Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows – purl stitches, wrong-side rows – knit stitches.
Lace Cable Pattern, needles US 7 (4.5 mm) (Main Pattern):
Work according to chart showing only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, knit the yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1–24 throughout.
Gauge: 23 stitches × 26 rows = 4 × 4 in.
Back:
Cast on 110 (124) sts and work 1.5 in (4 cm) in ribbing, in the last row increase evenly 21 sts = 131 (145) sts.
Then continue in main pattern as follows: edge st, 3 (4) repeats of pattern 1 (= 21 (28) sts), 1 center motif (= 23 sts), 3 repeats of pattern 2 but omit the last st (= 20 sts), 3 repeats of pattern 1 (= 21 sts), 1 center motif (= 23 sts), 3 (4) repeats of pattern 2 (= 21 (28) sts), edge st.
At 17.25 in (44 cm) bind off for armholes on both sides in every 2nd row 1×4, 1×3, 2×2 and 3×1 sts = 103 (117) sts.
At 27 (27.5) in (69/70 cm) bind off the center 27 sts for neck, on each side bind off 1×5 sts in the following 2nd row.
At the same time bind off for shoulder slope in every 2nd row 3×11 (2×13 and 1×14) sts.
Left Front:
Cast on 56 (62) sts and work 1.5 in (4 cm) in ribbing, in the last row increase evenly 11 (12) sts = 67 (74) sts.
Then continue in main pattern from right edge (= side edge) as follows: edge st, 3 (4) repeats of pattern 1 (= 21 (28) sts), 1 center motif (= 23 sts), 3 repeats of pattern 2 (= 21 sts), edge st.
At 9 in (22.5 cm) = after 48 rows in main pattern leave sts 18–50 (25–57) from side edge (= 33 sts) for pocket opening.
For pocket lining cast on 33 sts with needles US 7 (4.5 mm) and work 48 rows in reverse stockinette.
Work sts of pocket lining instead of the held sts and continue in main pattern.
At 17 (17.25) in (43/44 cm) bind off at left edge (= front edge) 1×1 st, then alternately in every 2nd and 4th row 8×1 st and in every 4th row 11×1 st.
For decreases work 2 sts together purlwise before the last cable.
At the same time at 17.25 in (44 cm) bind off at side edge for armhole in every 2nd row 1×4, 1×3, 2×2 and 3×1 sts.
At 27 (27.5) in (69/70 cm) work shoulder slope same as back.
Right Front:
Work to mirror left front, also mirror the pattern.
Sleeves:
Cast on 46 sts and work 0.75 in (2 cm) in ribbing, in last row increase evenly 21 sts = 67 sts.
Then continue in main pattern as follows: edge st, 3 repeats of pattern 1 (= 21 sts), 1 center motif (= 23 sts), 3 repeats of pattern 2 (= 21 sts), edge st.
At the same time for sleeve shaping increase on both sides in every 4th row 19×1 (13×1) sts, then alternately in every 2nd and 4th row 6×1 (14×1) sts = 117 (121) sts.
Work increased sts in pattern 1 (2).
At 15.75 in (40 cm) bind off for sleeve cap on both sides in every 2nd row 1×4, 3×3, 7×2 (6×2), 2×3 (3×3), 1×4, 1×6 sts, then bind off remaining sts.
Finishing:
Resume held sts of pockets and work 1 in (2.5 cm) in ribbing.
Sew bands to both fronts.
Sew pocket linings to inside of fronts.
Sew all seams, set in sleeves.
Along neck edge and front edges pick up approx. 356 (364) sts with circular needle, work 1 wrong-side row in knit sts, then 1.25 in (3 cm) in ribbing.
At the same time on right band at 0.75 in (1.5 cm) work 6 buttonholes: the 1st 0.75 in (2 cm) and the 6th 16.5 in (42 cm) from lower edge, distribute remaining 4 evenly between.
For each buttonhole bind off 2 sts and cast on again in next row.
