Lace and Cable Sweater
How to knit the Lace and Cable Sweater:
Sizes: US 10–14 / UK 14–18 / EU 40–44
Materials:
800 g (28.2 oz) yarn (100% cotton, 105 m/50 g, approximately 1,680 m / 1,837 yd total); straight knitting needles US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm); short circular knitting needle US 4 (3.5 mm).
Ribbing Pattern, US 4 (3.5 mm) needles: work 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches alternately.
Work all following patterns with US 6 (4 mm) needles.
Reverse Stocking Stitch: right-side rows: purl stitches; wrong-side rows: knit stitches.
Lace Pattern: multiple of 4 stitches.
Work according to Chart 1, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Repeat the pattern repeat across the width.
Work Rows 1–6 once, then repeat Rows 3–6 throughout.
Leaf Pattern (over 26 stitches):
Work according to Chart 2, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Repeat Rows 1–18 throughout.
Lace Panels (over 6 stitches):
Work according to Chart 3, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Work Rows 1–6 once, then repeat Rows 3–6 throughout.
Cable Pattern (over 6 stitches):
Work according to Chart 4, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear and purl the yarn overs.
Work Rows 1–10 once, then repeat Rows 3–10 throughout.
Lace Cable Pattern A (over 25 stitches):
Work according to Chart 5, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work Rows 1–30 once, then repeat Rows 3–30 throughout.
Lace Cable Pattern B (over 24 stitches):
Work according to Chart 5, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches and yarn overs.
Work Rows 1–30 once, then repeat Rows 3–30 throughout.
Gauge: 22.5 stitches and 28 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 inches).
Back:
Cast on 124 stitches and work 3 cm (1.2 inches) in Ribbing Pattern.
Then distribute the stitches, increasing 13 stitches evenly across the first row = 137 stitches, as follows: 1 edge stitch, 2 stitches Reverse Stocking Stitch, 8 stitches Lace Pattern, 2 stitches Reverse Stocking Stitch, 26 stitches Leaf Pattern, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 6 stitches Cable Pattern, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 25 stitches Lace Cable Pattern A, 2 stitches Reverse Stocking Stitch, 12 stitches Lace Pattern, 2 stitches Reverse Stocking Stitch, 6 stitches Cable Pattern, 2 stitches Reverse Stocking Stitch, 24 stitches Lace Cable Pattern B, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 1 edge stitch.
After 62 cm (24.4 inches) = 174 rows from the ribbing, bind off the center 33 stitches and finish each side separately.
For the neck shaping, bind off 3 stitches once and 2 stitches once at the inner edge in every second row.
After 65 cm (25.6 inches) = 182 rows from the ribbing, bind off the remaining 47 shoulder stitches on each side.
Front:
Work as for the Back, but arrange the patterns in mirror image and shape a deeper neckline.
For this, after 55.5 cm (21.9 inches) = 156 rows from the ribbing, bind off the center 11 stitches, then in every second row bind off 3 stitches twice, 2 stitches twice and 1 stitch six times.
Sleeves:
Cast on 52 stitches for each sleeve and work 3 cm (1.2 inches) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 8 stitches evenly across the last row = 60 stitches.
Then distribute the stitches, increasing 4 stitches in the first row = 64 stitches, as follows: 1 edge stitch, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 6 stitches Lace Pattern, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 26 stitches Leaf Pattern, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 6 stitches Cable Pattern, 6 stitches Lace Panel, 1 edge stitch.
For the sleeve shaping, increase 1 stitch at each side 28 times in every fourth row from the ribbing, incorporating the increased stitches into the Lace Pattern = 120 stitches.
After 40.5 cm (15.9 inches) = 114 rows from the ribbing, work 1 purl row across all stitches; after 41 cm (16.1 inches) = 115 rows from the ribbing, bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Sew the shoulder seams.
Using the circular needle, pick up 112 stitches around the neckline, work 1 purl row and then work 2.5 cm (1 inch) in Ribbing Pattern. Bind off the stitches in pattern.
Set in the sleeves. Sew the side and sleeve seams.
