Lace Sweater with Zigzag Pattern
How to knit the lace sweater with zigzag pattern:
Sizes: US 2–4 (US 10–12) / UK 6–8 (UK 14–16)
Materials:
450 (600) g yarn (100% merino wool, 125 m/50 g ≈ 137 yd/1.76 oz); straight needles 5 mm (US 8); circular needles 4.5 mm (US 7).
Ribbing Pattern: work alternately 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.
Stockinette Stitch: on right-side rows work knit stitches, on wrong-side rows work purl stitches; when working in rounds, work all stitches knit.
Pattern A: number of stitches multiple of 28 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to the chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Begin with 1 edge stitch and the stitches before Pattern A repeat, repeat Pattern A throughout, end with 1 edge stitch.
Repeat Rows 1 to 54.
Pattern B: number of stitches multiple of 14 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Work also according to the chart.
Begin with 1 edge stitch, repeat Pattern B throughout, end with the stitch after Pattern B repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Work Rows 39 to 54 once = 16 rows, working the center 3 stitches as knit stitches in Row 39.
Pattern sequence A: 54 rows Pattern A, 16 rows Pattern B, 10 rows Stockinette Stitch, 16 rows Pattern B, 10 rows Stockinette Stitch, 16 rows Pattern B = total 122 rows.
Pattern sequence B: 54 rows Pattern A, 16 rows Pattern B, 6 rows Stockinette Stitch, 16 rows Pattern B, 6 rows Stockinette Stitch, 16 rows Pattern B = total 114 rows.
Gauge:
In pattern sequence: 18 stitches and 26.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in).
In Stockinette Stitch: 18 stitches and 25.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in).
Back:
Cast on 87 (115) stitches and work 1 wrong-side row with knit stitches; then work in pattern sequence A.
At the same time, decrease for side shaping from the cast-on edge on both sides in every 16th row 7 times 1 stitch = 73 (101) stitches.
After 46 cm = 122 rows (18.1 in) from the cast-on edge, continue in Stockinette Stitch and at the same time bind off for the armholes on both sides 2 stitches, then in every 2nd row decrease 1 time 2 stitches and 2 times 1 stitch = 61 (89) stitches.
After 18.5 cm = 48 rows (21 cm = 54 rows / 7.3 (8.3) in) from the pattern sequence, bind off for the shoulder slopes on both sides 4 (7) stitches, then in every 2nd row bind off 3 times 4 (7) stitches.
At the same time as the first shoulder decrease, bind off the center 19 (23) stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For the neckline shaping, bind off from the inner edge in every 2nd row 1 time 3 stitches and 1 time 2 stitches.
Finish the work after 21 cm = 54 rows (23.5 cm = 60 rows / 8.3 (9.25) in) from the pattern sequence.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a V-shaped neckline.
For this, after 2.5 cm = 6 rows (1 in) from the pattern sequence, place the center stitch on hold and finish both sides separately.
For the slope, decrease from the inner edge alternately in every 2nd and 4th row 14 (16) times 1 stitch.
Sleeves:
Cast on 45 stitches and work 1 wrong-side row with knit stitches.
Then work in pattern sequence B, beginning Pattern A with 1 edge stitch and the stitches from arrow A, work the Pattern A repeat once, end with the stitches up to arrow B and 1 edge stitch; in Row 9 work a simple slip-slip-pass-over decrease instead of a double decrease, and in Row 25 work 2 stitches knit together instead of the double decrease.
After 28.5 cm = 76 rows (25 cm = 66 rows / 11.2 (9.8) in) from the cast-on edge, increase for sleeve shaping on both sides 1 stitch, then alternately in every 4th and 6th row increase 6 times (in every 4th row 11 times) 1 stitch = 59 (69) stitches, working the increased stitches into the pattern.
After 43 cm = 114 rows (16.9 in) from the cast-on edge, continue in Stockinette Stitch and at the same time bind off for the sleeve cap on both sides 3 stitches, then in every 2nd row bind off 1 time 2 stitches, 12 times 1 stitch, 1 time 2 stitches and 1 time 3 stitches.
After 12.5 cm = 32 rows (4.9 in) from the pattern sequence, bind off the remaining 15 (25) stitches.
Finishing:
Sew the shoulder seams.
Pick up 103 (111) stitches around the neckline with the circular needles, include the held center stitch of the front and work over all 104 (112) stitches in Ribbing Pattern, working the center stitch as a knit stitch.
For shaping, in every round slip the center stitch together with the previous stitch as if to knit, work the next stitch knit and pass it over the two slipped stitches.
When the ribbing measures 1.5 cm (0.6 in), work a further 2 cm (0.8 in) in Stockinette Stitch without decreases, then bind off all stitches loosely.
Set in the sleeves, sew the side seams and sleeve seams.
