Lightweight Lace Cardigan

How to knit the Lace Cardigan:
Sizes: US 10/12 (14/16), UK 14/16 (18/20)
Materials:
600 (650) g yarn (100% cotton, 142 yds/50 g); circular knitting needles US 1.5 and US 4. Seven pearl buttons.

Ribbing Pattern, needles US 1.5: alternate 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch.

All following patterns with needles US 4.
Stockinette Stitch: right-side rows knit stitches, wrong-side rows purl stitches.

Lace Pattern: number of stitches divisible by 19 + 17 (6) + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to chart.
The chart shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Begin with 1 edge stitch and the stitches from arrow A (C), repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches to arrow B (D) and 1 edge stitch.
Work Rows 1 - 50 once, then continuously repeat Rows 49 and 50.
For size US 10/12, at the beginning and end of Rows 15 - 24, Row 27 and Rows 31 - 50 omit the outer yarn overs and instead work knit stitches.

Gauge in Lace Pattern: 26 stitches and 30 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm).

Back:
Cast on 138 (146) stitches and work 0.8 inches (2 cm) in Ribbing Pattern.
In the last row increase 14 stitches evenly = 152 (160) stitches.
Continue working in Lace Pattern.
For the armholes, after 13 inches = 100 rows from ribbing, bind off at both sides in every 2nd row 1 x 3 stitches, 6 x 2 stitches each and 5 x 1 stitch each = 112 (120) stitches.
Continue straight.
For the neckline, after 22.8 inches = 174 rows from ribbing, bind off the center 14 stitches and finish both sides separately.
Then at the neckline bind off in every 2nd row 2 x 7 stitches each.
Bind off the remaining 35 (39) shoulder stitches each after 23.6 inches = 180 rows from ribbing.


Left Front:
Cast on 68 (73) stitches and work 0.8 inches (2 cm) in Ribbing Pattern.
In the last row increase 7 stitches evenly = 75 (80) stitches.
Then continue working in Lace Pattern, beginning with 1 edge stitch and the stitches from arrow E (F), repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches to arrow G and 1 edge stitch.
Work the decreases for the armhole at the right edge as for Back = 55 (60) stitches.
For the neckline, after 19.6 inches = 150 rows from ribbing, at the left edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 x 4 (5) stitches, 3 x 2 stitches each and 10 x 1 stitch each.
Bind off the remaining 35 (39) shoulder stitches at the same height as Back.

Right Front:
Work in the same way, but after the edge stitch begin the pattern from arrow G, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches to arrow H (J) and 1 edge stitch.

Sleeves:
Cast on 72 stitches each and work 0.8 inches (2 cm) in Ribbing Pattern.
Continue working in Lace Pattern, arranging the stitches from the center (= arrow G).
For the sleeve shaping, from ribbing increase at both sides 34 x 1 stitch in every 4th row according to pattern = 140 stitches.
For the sleeve cap, after 18 inches = 138 rows from ribbing, bind off at both sides in every 2nd row 1 x 2 stitches and 11 x 1 stitch each.
Bind off the remaining 114 stitches after 21.6 inches = 162 rows from ribbing.

Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Pick up approximately 138 stitches from the neckline and after 0.8 inches (2 cm) in Ribbing Pattern bind off all stitches as they appear.
Pick up 158 stitches each from the front edges including the narrow edges of the bands and work in Ribbing Pattern.
After 0.4 inches (1 cm) band height, work 7 buttonholes (= bind off 2 stitches each and cast them on again in the following row).
Work the first buttonhole 3 stitches from the lower edge, the following buttonholes with 23 stitches between each.
After 0.8 inches (2 cm) band height bind off the stitches as they appear.
Join side and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves, sew on buttons.
