Patchwork Style Lace Sweater
How to knit the patchwork style lace sweater:
Sizes: EU 38/40 (48/50) – US 8–10 (16–18) / UK 12–14 (20–22)
Materials:
550 (700) g yarn (80% cotton, 20% polyamide, 93 yd/50 g); straight needles US 8 and US 9 (5 and 5.5 mm); circular needles US 8 (5 mm).
Garter Stitch: knit all stitches on right-side and wrong-side rows.
Eyelet Stripe: even number of stitches.
Rows 1–3: Garter Stitch.
Row 4 (wrong side): * yarn over, purl 2 stitches together, repeat from *.
Rows 5 and 6: Garter Stitch.
Lace Pattern A: number of stitches is a multiple of 6 plus 2.
Work according to chart 1, only right-side rows are shown.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1–8 throughout.
Lace Pattern B:
Work as Lace Pattern A, but according to chart 2.
Repeat rows 1–12 throughout.
Lace Pattern C: number of stitches is a multiple of 10 plus 7.
Work according to chart 3, only right-side rows are shown.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1–12 throughout.
Lace Pattern D: number of stitches is a multiple of 5.
Work according to chart 4, only right-side rows are shown.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat rows 1–10 throughout.
Lace Pattern E: work as Lace Pattern D, but according to chart 5.
Central Pattern over 6 stitches:
Row 1: * purl 1, knit 2, yarn over, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1 stitch, pass the slipped stitch over, purl 1, repeat from *.
Row 2: * knit 1, purl 2, yarn over, purl 2 stitches together, knit 1, repeat from *.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 throughout.
Pattern Sequence on Sleeves: 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, 28 rows Lace Pattern A, 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, 28 rows Lace Pattern B, 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, 28 rows Lace Pattern E = total 102 rows.
Gauge: 16.5 stitches and 23.5 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 88 (108) stitches using US 8 needles and work 1 wrong-side row knit.
This row is not counted.
Then change to US 9 needles and work 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, beginning and ending with 1 edge stitch.
Then continue as follows: edge stitch, 2 (0) stitches Stockinette Stitch, 38 (50) stitches Lace Pattern A, 6 rows Central Pattern, 38 (50) stitches Lace Pattern B, 2 (0) stitches Stockinette Stitch, edge stitch. After 32 rows from cast-on work 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, continuing the Central Pattern and working 1 edge stitch at each side.
After 38 rows from cast-on continue as follows: edge stitch, 3 stitches Stockinette Stitch, 37 (47) stitches Lace Pattern C, 6 stitches Central Pattern, 40 (50) stitches Lace Pattern D, edge stitch.
After 64 rows from cast-on work 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, continuing the Central Pattern.
After 70 rows from cast-on continue as follows: edge stitch, 40 (50) stitches Lace Pattern E, 6 stitches Central Pattern, 38 (50) stitches Lace Pattern A, 2 (0) stitches Stockinette Stitch, edge stitch.
After 95 rows from cast-on work 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, continuing the Central Pattern.
After 102 rows from cast-on continue as follows: edge stitch, 2 (0) stitches Stockinette Stitch, 38 (50) stitches Lace Pattern B, 6 stitches Central Pattern, 37 (47) stitches Lace Pattern C, 3 stitches Stockinette Stitch, edge stitch.
At 21.5 in = 128 rows (54.5 cm) from cast-on work 6 rows Eyelet Stripe, at the same time in the first row bind off the center 20 (24) stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For the rounding, bind off at the inner edge in every 2nd row 1 x 3 and 1 x 2 stitches.
At 22.5 in = 134 rows (57 cm) from cast-on bind off the remaining 29 (37) shoulder stitches on each side.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a V-neck.
For this, at 16 in = 95 rows (41 cm) from cast-on bind off the center 2 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For the neckline shaping, bind off at the inner edge in every 2nd row 2 x 2 and 10 (12) x 1 stitch.
At 21.5 in = 128 rows (54.5 cm) from cast-on continue working the pattern over the lace sections as established, and at 21.75 in = 130 rows (55 cm) from cast-on bind off the remaining 29 (37) shoulder stitches on each side.
Sleeves:
Cast on 52 stitches using US 8 needles and work 1 wrong-side row knit.
Then change to US 9 needles and work in the stated pattern sequence, beginning and ending with 1 edge stitch and distributing Lace Patterns B and E from the center.
At 10.5 in = 62 rows (26.5 cm) (6.25 in = 38 rows / 16 cm) from cast-on increase 1 stitch at each side, then in every 4th row increase 9 x 1 stitch (in every 4th row 14 x 1 stitch and in every 2nd row 2 x 1 stitch) = 72 (86) stitches, incorporating the increased stitches into the pattern.
At 17 in = 100 rows (43.5 cm) from cast-on bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up 86 (94) stitches along the neckline using circular needles and work as follows:
Round 1: knit.
Round 2: purl.
Round 3: knit.
Round 4: * yarn over, knit 2 stitches together, repeat from *.
Round 5: knit.
Round 6: purl.
At the same time, for the V-neck work at the center point in every round slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1 stitch, pass both slipped stitches over.
When the band measures 6 rounds, bind off all stitches knitwise.
Set in sleeves, sew side seams and sleeve seams.
