Short-Sleeved Pullover with Pattern Mix
How to knit a pullover with a combination of stitch patterns:
Sizes (US/UK): 6–8 (10–12) 14–16
Materials:
400 (450) 450 g of yarn (64% cotton, 27% viscose, 9% polyamide, 93 yds/50 g); knitting needles US size 7 (UK size 7 / 4.5 mm).
Garter stitch: Knit all stitches in every row (both right and wrong side rows).
Lace Panel (number of stitches divisible by 4 + 2 edge stitches):
Row 1 (right side): 1 edge stitch, * knit 2, yarn over, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over *, repeat from * to *, 1 edge stitch.
Row 2 (wrong side): 1 edge stitch, * purl 2, yarn over, purl 2 together *, repeat from * to *, 1 edge stitch.
Repeat these 2 rows throughout.
Cable Pattern (over 15 stitches):
Work from Chart 1, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear or as indicated in the chart key.
Repeat rows 1 to 20 throughout in height.
Shell Pattern (over 23 stitches):
Work from Chart 2, which includes both right-side and wrong-side rows.
Repeat rows 1 to 12 throughout in height.
Gauge:
in Lace panel and Shell pattern: 14.5 stitches and 23 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)
in Cable pattern: 15 stitches = 2.4 inches (6 cm) wide
Back:
Using the long-tail cast-on method, cast on 87 (95) 103 stitches.
Work in the following sequence: 1 edge stitch, 16 (20) 24 stitches in lace panel, 15 stitches in cable pattern, 23 stitches in shell pattern, 15 stitches in cable pattern, 16 (20) 24 stitches in lace panel, 1 edge stitch.
After 13¾ in = 80 rows (14¾ in = 86 rows) 15¾ in = 92 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off 3 stitches at each edge for the armholes, then bind off 2 stitches twice and 1 stitch once on each side in every second row = 71 (79) 87 stitches remain.
After 20½ in = 120 rows (22½ in = 132 rows) 24½ in = 144 rows from the cast-on edge, work the center 19 stitches in garter stitch for 1 inch (2.5 cm), then bind off the center 17 stitches for the neckband and finish each side separately.
At the same time, for the shoulder shaping, bind off 9 (11) 11 stitches once, then 9 (10) 12 stitches twice on each side in every second row, starting at 21¼ in = 124 rows (23¼ in = 136 rows) 25¼ in = 148 rows from the cast-on edge.
At 22 in = 128 rows (24 in = 140 rows) 26 in = 152 rows from the cast-on edge, all stitches should be used up.
Front:
Work the same as for the back, but with a deeper neckline.
To shape the neckline, at 16½ in = 96 rows (18½ in = 108 rows) 20½ in = 120 rows from the cast-on edge, work the center 19 stitches in garter stitch for 1 inch (2.5 cm), then bind off the center 17 stitches and finish each side separately.
Sleeves:
Using the long-tail cast-on method, cast on 46 (54) 62 stitches.
Work lace panels, repeating the pattern repeat between the edge stitches.
At the same time, shape the sleeve by increasing 1 stitch at each end every 6th row 3 times = 52 (60) 68 stitches total, incorporating the increased stitches into the lace pattern.
After 4¼ in = 24 rows from the cast-on edge, shape the sleeve cap by binding off 2 stitches at each edge, then bind off 2 stitches once, 1 stitch seven times, 2 stitches twice, and 3 stitches once in every second row.
After 8¼ in = 48 rows from the cast-on edge, bind off the remaining 16 (24) 32 stitches.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder seams.
Set in the sleeves.
Sew the side seams and sleeve seams.
