Sweater in a Mix of Patterns
How to knit the sweater in various stitch patterns:
Size: S (M) L ; UK 8/10 (12/14) 16/18, US 6/8 (10/12) 14/16
Material:
650 (700) 800 g yarn (100% combed wool, length = 125 m / 50 g). Knitting needles US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm), circular needles US 6 (4 mm).
Ribbing Pattern, needles US 4 (3.5 mm): * k2, p2 *, repeat from *.
Work the remaining patterns with needles US 6 (4 mm).
Stockinette Stitch: knit on right side, purl on wrong side.
Reverse Stockinette Stitch: purl on right side, knit on wrong side.
Striped Pattern: * 18 rows in Stockinette Stitch, 4 rows in Reverse Stockinette Stitch, repeat from *.
Fantasy Pattern: a multiple of 4 stitches.
Rows 1 and 3: purl all stitches.
Row 2: 1 edge stitch, * slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 2 stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over (ssk-pso), from the next stitch work 3 stitches (knit 1, yarn over, knit 1), repeat from *, end with 1 edge stitch.
Repeat rows 1–4 throughout.
Main Pattern (first on 44 stitches):
Work according to the Chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear or follow the established pattern.
Work rows 1–54 once, then rows 11–112 once, continuing the pattern from row 85 according to the chart.
After row 112, extend the pattern.
Gauge:
Main pattern: 21.5 sts and 30 rows = 4" × 4" (10 × 10 cm);
Striped pattern: 22.5 sts and 31 rows = 4" × 4" (10 × 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 102 (110) 122 sts and work 3 cm (1¼ in) in Ribbing Pattern, beginning after the edge stitch with k1.
Then work the center 44 stitches in the Main Pattern.
After 6 cm (2⅜ in) from the ribbing, increase 6 stitches on each side of the Main Pattern = 118 (126) 138 sts (including the stitches increased inside the Main Pattern and the stripes).
For the neckline, after 59 cm = 176 rows (59 cm = 176 rows) 61 cm = 182 rows from the ribbing, bind off the center 28 (28) 32 stitches and finish each side separately.
For neckline shaping, bind off 3 sts once and 2 sts once at each neck edge on every right-side row.
Finishing:
Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approx. 100 (100) 108 sts around the neckline with circular needles and work 3 cm (1¼ in) in Ribbing Pattern, then bind off all stitches.
Sew side and sleeve seams, set in sleeves.
