Lace Cable Pattern (main pattern), needles size 3 mm (US 2.5): work with a multiple of 17 stitches + 9 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side rows only.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Across begin with 1 edge stitch, repeat the stitches of the pattern repeat, end with the stitches after the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Vertically work Rows 1 to 6 once, Rows 7 to 14 6 (4) times, Rows 15 to 34 twice, then repeat Rows 35 to 54 throughout.
The numbers in parentheses refer to the sleeves.
Gauge: 29 stitches and 34 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in).
Back:
Cast on 144 stitches and work 2 cm (3/4 in) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 20 stitches evenly across the last row = 164 stitches.
Continue in main pattern.
After 36 cm (14 1/4 in) = 122 rows from the ribbing, for the armholes bind off 8 stitches at each side once = 148 stitches.
After 58 cm (22 3/4 in) = 196 rows from the ribbing, for the neckline bind off the middle 38 stitches and finish both sides separately.
For shaping at the inner edge bind off on every second row 4 stitches once, 3 stitches once and 2 stitches once.
After 60 cm (23 1/2 in) = 204 rows from the ribbing bind off the remaining 46 shoulder stitches.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this, after 52 cm (20 1/2 in) = 176 rows from the ribbing bind off the middle 24 stitches and then on every second row bind off 3 stitches once, 2 stitches 3 times and 1 stitch 5 times, then on every fourth row bind off 1 stitch twice.
Sleeves:
Cast on 60 stitches and work 2 cm (3/4 in) in Ribbing Pattern, increasing 9 stitches evenly across the last row = 69 stitches.
Then work in main pattern, beginning with 1 edge stitch and the stitches from arrow A, repeat the pattern repeat, end with the stitches to arrow B and 1 edge stitch.
At the same time increase for the sleeve shaping at both sides, starting from the ribbing, 1 stitch 5 times on every second row and 1 stitch 30 times on every fourth row, incorporating the increased stitches into the pattern = 139 stitches.
After 42 cm (16 1/2 in) = 142 rows from the ribbing bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Work the shoulder seams.
Pick up 138 stitches along the neckline with circular needles, work 2 cm (3/4 in) in Ribbing Pattern and bind off all stitches in pattern.
Set in the sleeves, work the side seams and the sleeve seams.
