Sweater in Pattern Mix
How to knit the sweater in pattern mix:
Sizes: EU 38/40 (42/44) 46 — UK 10/12 (14/16) 18 — US 6/8 (10/12) 14
Materials:
750 (800) 850 g yarn (50% cotton, 50% acrylic, 87 yds/1.75 oz); straight needles 4 mm and 4.5 mm (US 6 and 7); circular needles 4 mm (US 6).
Garter stitch in rounds, 4 mm (US 6) needles: alternately work 1 round knit and 1 round purl.
All following patterns are worked with 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.
Garter stitch: right-side and wrong-side rows – knit stitches.
Lace Cable Pattern (main pattern): number of stitches is a multiple of 10 + 3 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to chart 1, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear or as indicated.
Begin with 1 edge stitch and the stitches before the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches after the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Work Rows 1 and 2 a total of 4 (6) 8 times, then repeat Rows 3 to 24 once.
Repeat these 30 (34) 38 rows once.
Cable Pattern: number of stitches is a multiple of 12 + 3 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to chart 2, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, purl all stitches.
Begin with 1 edge stitch and the stitches before the pattern repeat, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with the stitches after the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch.
Work Rows 1 to 14 once.
Pattern sequence: * 30 (34) 38 rows of main pattern, 14 rows of cable pattern, 8 rows garter stitch, repeat from *.
Gauge: 21 stitches and 32 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 105 (115) 125 stitches using 4 mm (US 6) needles and work in the given pattern sequence.
After 4 rows change to 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.
In Row 1 of the cable pattern, increase evenly 20 (22) 24 stitches and decrease these stitches again in Row 1 of garter stitch.
After 13.5 inches = 110 rows (14.5 inches = 118 rows) 15.5 inches = 126 rows from cast-on, bind off for armholes at both sides in every 2nd row 1 x 3 stitches, 2 x 2 stitches and 1 x 1 stitch = 89 (99) 109 stitches.
Now in Row 1 of the cable pattern increase evenly 16 (18) 20 stitches and decrease these stitches again in Row 1 of garter stitch.
After 21.75 inches = 178 rows (23.75 inches = 194 rows) 25.75 inches = 210 rows from cast-on, bind off for shoulder slopes at both sides 1 x 4 (5) 6 stitches, then in every 2nd row 2 x 4 (5) 6 stitches and 2 x 5 (6) 7 stitches.
At the same time as the first shoulder decrease, bind off the middle 35 stitches for the neckline and finish both sides separately.
For rounding, bind off at the inner edge in every 2nd row 1 x 3 stitches and 2 x 1 stitch.
After 22.75 inches = 186 rows (24.75 inches = 202 rows) 26.75 inches = 218 rows from cast-on, all stitches are used.
Front:
Work as for the back, but with a deeper neckline.
For this, after 20 inches = 162 rows (21.75 inches = 178 rows) 23.75 inches = 194 rows from cast-on, bind off the middle 21 stitches and in every 2nd row 1 x 4 stitches, 2 x 3 stitches and 2 x 1 stitch.
Sleeves:
Cast on 45 (45) 55 stitches using 4 mm (US 6) needles and work in the given pattern sequence.
After 4 rows change to 4.5 mm (US 7) needles.
Distribute the cable pattern from the center; for size 38/40 increase stitches in Row 1 as follows: in the first cable panel increase 8 stitches, in the second cable panel increase 12 stitches and in the third cable panel increase 6 stitches — this panel lies within the sleeve cap.
Decrease these added stitches each time in Row 1 of garter stitch.
For sizes 42/44 and 46, perform increases and decreases only in the first and second cable panels; do not increase in the third cable panel, but for size 46 increase 10 stitches in the first cable panel and 14 stitches in the second cable panel or decrease them accordingly.
At the same time, increase for sleeve shaping at both sides alternately in every 6th and 8th row from cast-on 16 times (in every 6th row 19 times) and in every 8th row 3 times and in every 6th row 15 times 1 stitch each = 77 (83) 91 stitches, incorporating the increased stitches into the pattern.
After 14.75 inches = 120 rows from cast-on, bind off for the sleeve cap at both sides in every 2nd row 1 x 3 stitches, 2 x 2 stitches, 8 (9) 10 x 1 stitch, 2 (3) 4 x 2 stitches, 2 x 3 stitches and 1 x 4 stitches.
After 18.75 inches = 152 rows (19.25 inches = 156 rows) 19.75 inches = 160 rows from cast-on, bind off the remaining 19 (19) 21 stitches.
Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Pick up 100 stitches along the neckline with circular needles and work 0.75 inches (2 cm) in garter stitch, then bind off all stitches.
Set in sleeves, work side seams and sleeve seams.
