Sweater with Lace and Cable Pattern
How to knit the sweater with lace and cable pattern:
Sizes: EU 36, 40 and 44 (UK 8, 12, 16 / US 4, 8, 12).
Bust circumference: 84, 92 and 100 cm (33, 36¼ and 39¼ in)
Materials:
600 (650–700) g yarn (84% cotton, 16% linen, 50 g/90 m / 98 yd), knitting needles size 3.5 mm (US 4), circular needles size 3 mm (US 2.5), 50 cm (20 in) long.
Hem, cuffs and edging:
With size 3 mm (US 2.5) needles cast on stitches using a contrast yarn according to figures 1 and 2.
Row 1: alternately knit 1 stitch, slip 1 stitch as if to purl with yarn in front; end with knit 1 stitch, edge stitch.
Rows 2 and 3: work as Row 1 – slip the worked stitches, knit the stitches that were slipped in the previous row.
From Row 4: work alternately knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, see figure 4; after several rows remove the contrast yarn.
Lace and cable pattern (main pattern):
Work according to chart, which shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work the stitches as they appear, purl the yarn overs.
Repeat Rows 1 to 22 throughout, cross the cables in every 6th row.
Gauge:
9 stitches cable from a to b = 4 cm (1½ in),
27 stitches lace pattern from c to d = 16 cm (6¼ in) wide, 25 rows = 10 cm (4 in).
Back:
Cast on 96 (104–112) stitches for the hem.
In Row 34 increase 1 knit stitch after the 6th (7th–8th) stitch and 14 (15–16) times 1 knit stitch after every 6 stitches, working the stitch from the horizontal strand between stitches through the back loop = 111 (120–129) stitches.
Then work in cable pattern according to chart, after the edge stitch work 12 (13–14) pattern repeats from a to b, finish with stitches after e.
After 140 (140–136) rows = 56 (56–54½) cm (22 (22–21½) in) from the hem, for shoulder shaping bind off on both sides first 10 (11–7) stitches, then in every 2nd row 2 (2–3) times 9 (10–7) stitches and 0 (0–1) time 6 stitches.
At the same time with the first (first–third) decrease bind off the middle 45 (48–51) stitches for the neckline.
Finish each side separately, work the second side in reverse.
On the inner edge bind off in every 2nd row 1 time 3 stitches and 1 time 2 stitches.
Front:
Work as for back, but in Row 34 increase 1 stitch after the 8th (12th–7th) stitch and 5 (4–7) times 1 stitch after every 16 (20–14) stitches = 102 (109–120) stitches.
Then work according to chart as follows: edge stitch, 4 (4–5) pattern repeats from a to b, 1 pattern repeat from arrow c (b–c) to d (e–d), 4 (4–5) pattern repeats from a to b, finish with stitches after e.
After 132 rows = 53 cm (20¾ in) from the hem bind off the middle 26 (27–32) stitches for the neckline.
On the inner edge additionally bind off 1 time 4 stitches, 1 time 3 stitches, 1 time 2 stitches and 1 time 1 stitch.![]()
Sleeves:
Cast on 50 stitches for the cuff.
In Row 22 increase 1 stitch after the 2nd stitch and 15 times 1 stitch after every 3 stitches = 66 stitches.
Then work the cable pattern according to chart from a to b.
For sleeve shaping increase on both sides 1 stitch in Row 11 (7–7) and 13 (14–14) times 1 stitch alternately in every following 2nd and 4th row = 120 (124–124) stitches.
After 100 rows = 40 cm (15¾ in) from the cuff bind off all stitches.
Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Join side seams, leaving 27 (28–28) cm (10¾ (11–11) in) open for armholes.
For neckline edging, with circular needle pick up 108 (114–118) stitches along the neckline; after 10 rows bind off the stitches or work Rows 9 and 10 according to figure 3 and then bind off by sewing the stitches according to figures 5 and 6.
Join sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
