Sweater with Muff Pocket and Tubular Ribbing
How to knit the Sweater with Muff Pocket:
Size: US 10, UK 14
Materials:
500 g yarn (100% merino wool, 125 m / 50 g); Knitting needles 3.5 mm and 4 mm (US 4 and US 6).
Tubular Ribbing:
Using waste yarn, cast on half of the required number of stitches.
Row 1: With working yarn, *knit 1 stitch, yarn over*, repeat from * to * throughout.
Row 2: *Knit the yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl without working it, yarn in front*, repeat from * to * throughout.
Row 3 and all following rows: *Knit 1 stitch, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, yarn in front*, repeat from * to * throughout.
Remove the waste yarn in the finished piece.
Ribbing Pattern 2/2: Work alternately 2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches.
Stockinette Stitch: On right-side rows, knit the stitches. On wrong-side rows, purl the stitches.
Gauge:
Stockinette stitch with 4 mm needles: 21 stitches and 32 rows = 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 inches).
Back:
With 3.5 mm needles, cast on 110 stitches and work 4 rows in Tubular Ribbing, then 4 rows in Ribbing Pattern 2/2.
Change to 4 mm needles and work the middle 54 stitches in stockinette stitch, the outer 28 stitches on each side in Ribbing Pattern 2/2, at the same time decreasing 1 stitch on each side every 10th row, 7 times.
At a height of 48 cm (19 inches), shape the armholes by binding off 4 stitches on each side once, then decrease 1 stitch after the first 2 stitches and before the last 2 stitches in every second row, 4 times.
At a height of 66 cm (26 inches), bind off the remaining 80 stitches.
Front:
Work as for the back, but at a height of 15 cm (6 inches), for the pocket work only the middle 54 stitches as follows:
Work 3 stitches in Tubular Ribbing, 48 stitches in stockinette stitch, 3 stitches in Tubular Ribbing.
After 19 cm (7.5 inches), place all stitches on hold.
Resume the 28 stitches in Ribbing Pattern 2/2 at the beginning of the row, pick up 54 stitches from the same row behind the stitches already worked for the pocket, then resume the remaining 28 stitches in Ribbing Pattern 2/2 and continue working as established.
After 34 cm (13.5 inches), work each of the middle 54 stitches together with the held stitches of the pocket lining, knitting 2 stitches together.
At a height of 48 cm (19 inches), shape the armholes as for the back.
At a height of 58 cm (23 inches), for the neckline bind off the middle 18 stitches and continue working each side separately, binding off 1 stitch at the neckline edge in every second row, 8 times.
At a height of 66 cm (26 inches), bind off the remaining 21 stitches for each shoulder.
Sleeves:
With 3.5 mm needles, cast on 48 stitches and work 4 rows in Tubular Ribbing, then 6 rows in Ribbing Pattern 2/2.
Change to 4 mm needles and work in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 stitch on each side every 16th row, 8 times.
After 21 cm (8.25 inches), work Ribbing Pattern 2/2 over all stitches, then after 40 cm (15.75 inches) resume stockinette stitch.
At a height of 46 cm (18 inches), shape the sleeve cap by binding off 4 stitches on each side once, then decrease 1 stitch after the first 2 stitches and before the last 2 stitches in every second row, 19 times.
At a height of 60 cm (23.5 inches), bind off the remaining 18 stitches.
Finishing:
Work one shoulder seam.
For the neckband, with 3.5 mm needles pick up 94 stitches around the neckline, work 3 rows in Ribbing Pattern 2/2 and 2 rows in Tubular Ribbing, then bind off all stitches using the grafting method.
Work the second shoulder seam, set in the sleeves, and sew the sleeve seams and side seams.
