Zigzag Pattern Sweater
How to knit the Zigzag Pattern Sweater:
Size: US 6–8 / UK 10–12
Material:
650 g yarn (55% extra-fine merino wool, 35% polyacrylic/microfiber, 10% cashmere, yardage 100 m/50 g), knitting needles US 8–9 (5–5.5 mm) and a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle US 8 (5 mm).
Stockinette stitch (knitting needles US 8–9 / 5–5.5 mm): right-side rows knit stitches, wrong-side rows purl stitches.
Zigzag Pattern (Ribbing Pattern – knitting needles US 8–9 / 5–5.5 mm):
Number of stitches for front and back divisible by 17 + 1 + 2 edge stitches, for sleeves divisible by 21 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Work according to the chart, which shows right-side and wrong-side rows.
The pattern in the chart is shown as it is worked.
Read wrong-side rows from left to right, right-side rows from right to left.
At the end of even-numbered rows, there is 1 stitch more per pattern repeat on the needle; at the end of odd-numbered rows, the original number of stitches is reached again.
This is not mentioned further in the instructions.
For front and back, after Row 1, always repeat Rows 2 to 5.
For sleeves, first after Row 1, always repeat Rows 2 to 5.
Then, for the 1st decrease, work Rows 6 to 9; for the 2nd decrease, work Rows 10 to 13; for the 3rd decrease, work Rows 14 to 17; after that, always repeat Rows 18 to 21.
After all decreases, the number of stitches is divisible by 15 + 1 + 2 edge stitches.
Note:
The zigzag edges are formed by the pattern.
Always measure the length of the pieces at the shorter sections along the patent stitches.
In addition, along the outer edges from the armhole and when shaping the sleeve cap, make sure that for each yarn over 1 stitch is decreased; for this purpose, work the edge stitch together with the following stitch or with the preceding stitch as a knit stitch.
Gauge (knitting needles US 8–9 / 5–5.5 mm):
Zigzag Pattern: 21 stitches and 25 rows = 4 × 4 inches (10 × 10 cm).
Back:
Cast on 105 stitches with knitting needles US 8–9 (5–5.5 mm) and work in the Zigzag Pattern = edge stitch, 6 times the pattern repeat of 17 stitches, the last stitch of the chart, edge stitch.
At a height of 16 inches (40 cm), for the armholes, bind off on both sides in every 2nd row 1 time 4 stitches, 1 time 3 stitches, 1 time 2 stitches and 1 time 1 stitch (= 85 stitches).
At a height of 21¾ inches (55 cm), for the back neckline, bind off the center 29 stitches, then on both sides in every 2nd row bind off 1 time 6 stitches and 1 time 4 stitches.
At a height of 22¾ inches (58 cm), bind off the remaining 18 shoulder stitches on each side straight.
Front:
Work as for the back, but at a height of 20½ inches (52 cm), for the front neckline, bind off the center 21 stitches, then on both sides in every 2nd row bind off 1 time 4 stitches, 1 time 3 stitches, 3 times 2 stitches and 1 time 1 stitch.
At a height of 22¾ inches (58 cm), bind off the remaining 18 shoulder stitches on each side straight.
Sleeves:
Cast on 87 stitches with knitting needles US 8–9 (5–5.5 mm) and work in the Zigzag Pattern = edge stitch, 4 times the pattern repeat of 21 stitches, the last stitch of the chart, edge stitch.
In each pattern repeat, work 3 decreases:
– in the 1st and 3rd repeats, the 1st decrease after 15 rows, that is, in the 4th left rib, the 2nd decrease after 47 rows, that is, in the 12th left rib, the 3rd decrease after 79 rows, that is, in the 20th left rib;
– in the 2nd and 4th repeats, the 1st decrease after 31 rows, that is, in the 8th left rib, the 2nd decrease after 63 rows, that is, in the 16th left rib, the 3rd decrease after 95 rows, that is, in the 24th left rib.
After all decreases, 63 stitches remain on the needle.
At a height of 17 inches (43 cm), for the sleeve cap, bind off on both sides in every 2nd row 1 time 3 stitches, 1 time 2 stitches, 14 times 1 stitch, 1 time 2 stitches and 1 time 3 stitches, then bind off the remaining 15 stitches (= total height 22¾ inches / 58 cm).
Finishing:
Sew the pieces together.
Around the neckline, pick up about 106 stitches with the circular needle and work 2 rounds of purl stitches, then bind off the stitches as knit stitches.
