Cable Stitch Knitting Pattern #115

How to knit the Cable Stitch:
Work with a multiple of 20 stitches + 2 + 2 edge stitches.
Cast on 24 stitches (20 + 2 + 2 edge stitches) and knit according to the chart.
The chart shows only right-side rows.
On wrong-side rows, work stitches as they appear, knit the stitches in garter stitch.
The pattern repeat is 20 stitches wide.
Begin with 1 edge stitch, repeat the pattern repeat throughout, end with 2 stitches after the pattern repeat and 1 edge stitch.

Abbreviation:
k: knit stitch
p: purl stitch
Garter stitch (1 stitch): knit in right-side and wrong-side rows.
4-stitch left cable: slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.
4-stitch right cable: slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.

Row-by-row instructions:
Rows 1, 5, 9 and 13 (right side): 1 edge stitch, * p2, k2, 4 stitches in garter stitch, k2, p2, k8 *; repeat from * to *; end with p2, 1 edge stitch.
Row 2 and all even-numbered rows (wrong side): work stitches as they appear, knit the stitches in garter stitch.
Rows 3, 7, 11 and 15: 1 edge stitch, * p2, k2, 4 stitches in garter stitch, k2, p2, 4-stitch right cable, 4-stitch left cable *; repeat from * to *; end with p2, 1 edge stitch.
Rows 17, 21, 25 and 29: 1 edge stitch, * p2, k8, p2, k2, 4 stitches in garter stitch, k2 *; repeat from * to *; end with p2, 1 edge stitch.

Rows 19, 23, 27 and 31: 1 edge stitch, * p2, 4-stitch right cable, 4-stitch left cable, p2, k2, 4 stitches in garter stitch, k2 *; repeat from * to *; end with p2, 1 edge stitch.
Repeat Rows 1–32 throughout.
